Updated dining project
The steps our client took are as follows:
Prep: Mineral Spirits (to remove wax buildup) & TSP Alternative. Sanded table top to bare wood.
Paint: Coal Black from Fusion Mineral Paint
Stain: Fusion Cappuccino SFO
Time taken: 1 week
For the table and chairs our client followed these steps:
I cleaned with mineral spirits (Fusion brand) and then cleaned with Fusion TSP alternative. I sanded the top of the table and the cross pieces of each chair to bare wood using 80, 120 and then 180 grit sandpaper. The base of the table and the rest of the chairs were scuff sanded with 120 grit sandpaper. I then took the compressor and hose and blew off the majority of the dust and then wiped down everything with a damp cloth. I painted the table base with Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black using the Staalmeester brush 40? I believe. I had the table upside down on a work table to paint. The top of the table was stained with Fusion Cappuccino Stain and Finishing Oil. I used a brush to apply the stain. Waited about 15 minutes and rubbed it off with an old t-shirt. I did two coats of the stain.
Foe the chairs, I painted them using the same Staalmeester brush and also with a small artist brush. Most of the chair was painted with Fusions Coal Black Mineral Paint. I painted the chairs upside down for the bottoms of the chairs , right side up and everything in between (lol) to get the spindles completely covered. I did try to use a sock to paint the spindles and I had some success, but not as great coverage as the brushes. The cross pieces of the chairs was stained with Fusion Cappuccino Stain and Finishing Oil. It was applied with a brush and after 15 minutes I wiped off with an old t-shirt.
I also put Fusion Hemp Oil on the top of the table and it really brightened it up!
I went online to find new fabric for the seats and settled on fabric I found at Christies Fabrics. The fabric ties the set together and also has a the flower pattern similar to the curtains in the room. I used the previous cover as a pattern and affixed with a staple gun.
I have a small room and this combination does not make the space seem small or crowded as the curtains balance it out, I think.
Since I waited some time between coats etc, and had limited time to work on it, if I did this again non stop, I would say it would take a week or more - the chairs are certainly fiddley.
